On Feb. 28, Upson County Extension Office and Upson County Livestock hosted more than 45 veterans for the cattle portion of the Agribility/Farm Again Farmers Boot Camp.
Upson Extension Agent Hailey Partain facilitated the local program, which is designed for disabled veterans across the State of Georgia. The program in Upson was the first phase of the statewide program. More than 20 local volunteers joined forces to make it happen.

Classes of the day included Cattle Breed Basics, Record Keeping, Cattle Evaluation, Biosecurity, Transportation/Trailer Safety, Cattle Nutrition, Herd Health, and Equipment Needs.
At the end of the day, attendees took a test to become Beef Quality Assurance Certified.

“Skippy’s a partner, she’s a pet and she helps us with the cattle every day,” Donald said. That assistance was necessary after he was injured on the farm in 2019 – paralyzed from the neck down – and faced a long road to recovery. He regained the ability to walk, using two canes. “Being able to keep the cows and having something for me to live for every day…she has contributed to that immensely,” he said.
When a half-ton bale of hay fell off a wagon in 2019, striking the back of Donald Adams’ head, the future of his family farm fell into immediate uncertainty. Read the story here that was highlighted within the Collage of Agricultural Sciences Cultivate magazine.
